Regenerative Medicine

What is Regenerative Medicine (aka Cellular Therapies)?

Regenerative Medicine (Cellular Therapies) which is commonly referred to as “stem cells” is where a patient’s bone marrow/adipose tissue (fat)/growth factors are harvested from them in order to repair injuries to soft tissue and bone due to excessive athletic activities or repetitive motions. Using ultrasound guidance, the bone marrow/adipose tissue (fat)/growth factors are precisely re-injected into the areas that have been injured. This in turn sets in motion a healing and regeneration process that may take the patient up to 6 months to fully feel the effects of.

Are the cells taken from embryos?

No. We use the patient’s own cells to facilitate the patient’s body’s natural ability to heal itself.

What can I do to prepare my body for better cell harvesting?

Your doctor will let you know exactly what you need to do before and after your procedure. If you have any questions about it, please let him know.

Is the downtime after the procedure comparable to surgery?

The degree of activity that a patient needs to modify for a regenerative medical procedure is dramatically less when compared to the surgical alternatives. You will be restricted to low impact activities for about 4 weeks depending on your problem and the procedure chosen. You will see your doctor after and he will direct the activities you can resume. Basically, you will be building up gradually to higher impact activities and it’s important not to overdo anything that would hinder the healing process.

Will I need more than one procedure?

This greatly depends on the person. Most commonly one procedure is necessary, but it possible depending on the severity of the injury as well as the repair potential of your cells that you may need additional treatments.

Will my insurance cover it?

At this time, traditional medical insurance does not cover Regenerative Medicine (Cellular Therapies). For more information on this, please go to Dr. Gerard Malanga’s explanation: “Why Aren’t Regenerative Medicine (Cellular Therapies) Covered by My Insurance?
